Newsletter of Californians for Electoral Reform

Summer 2007

President’s Letter

I'm real excited about the progress our two bills are making in the Legislature, but there are articles elsewhere in this newsletter about that, and I'm limited to 500 words, so I'll stick to internal business and let others tell you about our bills.

We had a very successful Annual General Meeting on May 19th.  Berkeley City Councilmember Kriss Worthington gave a very informative keynote address. We also gave out five Wilma Rule awards.  The recipients were:

  • Assembly Member Gene Mullin, for authoring, with Assembly Member Mark Leno, AB 1294, that would allow all cities and counties the same right to use Choice Voting that charter cities and charter counties have.

  • Assembly Member Mark Leno, for authoring, with Assembly Member Gene Mullin, AB 1294, that would allow all cities and counties the same right to use Choice Voting that charter cities and charter counties have.

  • The Davis City Council, for showing leadership and being responsive to the voters of the City of Davis by placing Measure L on the November 2006 ballot so that the voters could advise whether the City of Davis should consider adopting choice voting as the system to elect City Council members.

  • The Voters of the City of Davis, for approving Measure L in the November 2006 election, and in so doing advising the City Council that the City of Davis should consider adopting choice voting as the system to elect City Council members.

  • CfER Board Member Rob Dickinson, for his intense efforts in finding authors for AB 1294, organizing a huge list of organizational supporters, coordinating their testimony at the April 17th hearing, and doing a fantastic job himself in his own testimony for AB 1294, all of which resulted in its successful passage out of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee.

The following people were elected to the CfER Board: Steve Chessin, Rob Dickinson, Tom Gangale, Dave Kadlecek, Paula Lee, Pete Martineau, Casey Peters, Bob Richard, and Gabrielle Weeks.  David Holtzman was not re-elected but will continue as LA Chapter Contact (both City and County).

At the May 20th CfER Leadership Retreat we elected officers for 2007-2008.  Steve Chessin was elected President; Paula Lee and Rob Dickinson, Executive Vice Presidents; Dave Kadlecek, Treasurer; David Cary, Secretary, and Chuck O'Neil, Chief Financial Officer.>

We also established the CfER meeting calendar.  We will have in-person meetings in August, December, and February, the Annual General Meeting in May, and conference calls in the other months.  Except for our Annual General Meeting, for which we also use the postal service, logistical information for our conference calls and in-person meetings is only sent by email, and then only to those CfER members for whom we have a current email address.  If you'd like to receive notice of those meetings, including logistical details, make sure we have your current email address.  Go to the "Join" portion of our website, enter your name and email address, and click on "Update My Records".

We also discussed our goals, but I'm out of space.  Next time.

Steve Chessin, President
