CfER Candidate Survey

This page presents the results of Californians for Electoral Reform's 2002 Candidate Survey. Californians for Electoral Reform sent a questionnaire to all 437 of the California candidates for State Assembly, State Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and statewide partisan offices, asking candidates their views on issues related to the use of instant runoff voting and proportional representation methods in public elections.

We received responses from at least fifty-eight of the candidates. However, most of the answers received were from candidates who had no chance of winning their race. The three responses received fairly early from candidates who had a chance of winning (in fact, they were all almost sure winners and did in fact win Assembly seats) were presented in an earlier version of these tables. The fifty-eight responses included in these tables are all of those received, with the possible exception of a small number that may have arrived very late and/or been misplaced.

There are separate pages for the State Assembly, State Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and statewide offices, each of which include a list of the questions asked (different for state and federal offices). In addition, there is an alphabetical link of all candidates for all offices with links to the location where the candidates response (or lack thereof) appears in a table.

All references to candidates names in the tables and lists indicate whether the candidate won by a landslide, a comfortable majority, a majority or a plurality, using the definitions of landslide and comfortable majority that the Center for Voting and Democracy used in its 2002 election predictions made two years in advance. You can also see the complete election results to which these criteria were applied on the California Secretary of State's web site.
